What your internet can handle

The test starts by itself, and the answers — what will work and what will stutter — appear as it runs.

How long it takes

How it measures

Your browser downloads and uploads random data to this site's server over several connections and counts how much gets through. The first second and a half is ignored while the connection ramps up. Upload is counted by what the server confirmed, not by what left the browser. The test stops once the speed settles, or after 10 seconds. Ping is the response time of a tiny request, the median of twelve; ping under load is the same thing measured while the download is running.

This measures the path to one server, not the whole internet, so the numbers may differ from Speedtest. On a gigabit connection the result may hit the server's own limit. For the question "will it handle this" that is enough.

The test uses data: hundreds of megabytes on a fast connection, and the exact amount is shown under the result. If Data Saver is on in your browser, the test will not start by itself. The result lives only in the link: the test server does not record anything.

A regular speed test answers with a number, but the question is almost always different: will the call hold up, can I switch to 4K, how long will the game take to download. Here it is the same number, already turned into an answer.
